Hong Kong Native English Teacher Overview of the Perth Trip

Language is about more than just the acquisition of words and phrases, it is also important to consider the learners attitude. The Perth Theatresports program provided an authentic English environment that challenged our students to listen, think, speak and be understood in English.
The weekend of Theatresports workshops involved 10 hours of learning improvisational games with instructions being given in broad, free-flowing Australian English. The students had to interact and make themselves understood by the local students. This also involved subtle processes of communication including verbal and non-verbal methods of transmitting meaning.
Our students also had the opportunity to see students from another local school compete in an interhouse Theatresports competition. This gave them an excellent sample of the standard of performance that would be required of them in their own competition.
The competition for the Senior FOTS Cup involved 5 other schools with great experience in Theatresports and drama. Our team Made In Hong Kong established in their very strong entrance, that they would be competitive and brought their own Asian style of play. The audience responded enthusiastically to a physicality and humour that was borne out of the need to improvise immediately on a given topic.
Our students placed highest in the scoring of all the teams in their two improvised scenes and overall were narrowly placed second runner-up. The team had taken risks and overcome any language obstacles with great grace.
Apart from participating in Theatresports, the students had time to sightsee, have a school visit and numerous activities that saw them interacting with locals in a rich hothouse of language and culture.
The hospitality and generosity of the Sanderson- Green family cannot be understated. They were always mindful of giving the students a variety of experiences in Perth. Their presence was a reassurance for the students whose mantra when discussing concerns about their performance in the show was, Do not worry s Michael and Angela will help us.
Upon returning to Hong Kong and dropping off the students at their homes, the taxi driver asked me what school we were from and commented that he had never had such an opportunity when he was at school. Even Hong Kong taxi drivers can appreciate the value of such an experience. The students returned brimming with confidence and motivation having gained invaluable experiences in Perth.
